Ruffled Ribbon Trees

My nativity set is new and little bare. It's a collection I'd like to add more pieces to in time, but for this year I decided Mary and Joseph needed some fun, colorful trees [matching my Christmas decor, of course] behind them.

So I hit the craft store in search of some inspiration:
50% off of the ribbon spools was inspiration enough, so I got some styraphoam trees and made a plan.
Real simple! I just took the ribbon and made a ruffle with low tension and long stitch length on my sewing machine. If I pressed the pedal fast enough the ribbon just ruffled up on its own.
Then I hot glued a band of ribbon all the way up the trees, and ta da:
Not too bad!
and just enough color for the corner of my mantel too!
This could have easily been done using felt or spare pieces of fabric too!

I've got a couple more Christmas crafts I'm planning on trying to get to, but if you're looking for more inspiration or a little project to do, most of my Christmas decorations are all handmade. One of my favorites is my fabric scrap wreath:
Oh how I'd much rather play with crafts than clean the kitchen.... but duty calls ya'll! Have a lovely Wednesday!

  2. Whew! I just got caught up on your blog! Sorry the little one has a cold, but yes she is still cute with snot on her face! hehehe. :)

What a score on Happy Feet. It was on ABC Family last night, and M went crazy for it. Perhaps I should buy a copy too.

Your trees look great! Very crafty, and speaking of tree...I can't believe you got that $400 tree for free. It's amazing what people will just throw away. So wasteful, but I'm glad the tree made it to you and not the dump!! I actually wish we would buy a tree like that, but David refuses every time I mention. He says he will only have a real one. Honestly...I'd like a nice fake one and a real one. :)

You look beautiful in your weekly shot.

  4. What a cool idea! Your ribbon trees turned out great. And they look very striking next to the simplicity of your nativity scene.

  7. GAH! So cute! I was all excited to totally copy you, and then...I saw the word "sewing machine." Grrr...I could smack my mom for not teaching me to sew! Looks like I'm going to blister my fingers with the glue gun instead! So cute!
